As the Queen City gateway to northern New England, Greater Manchester provides for royal tax-free shopping sprees. That’s because New Hampshire is the only New England state not imposing a state sales tax. Manchester’s downtown spills over with shops and boutiques for jewelry to sports memorabilia. Since 1935, Van Otis Chocolates -– home of Swiss Fudge -- has stirred up all things sweet, also offering factory tours. The Mall of New Hampshire, one of the first major malls built in the state and anchored by Filene’s, also has Sears, JCPenney, Best Buy, Kitchen, Etc. and more than 120 specialty stores. Among nearby malls and outlets, Concord’s Steeplegate Mall has more than 75 department stores and specialty shops; North Conway’s Settlers’ Green Shopping Outlet features Adidas, Banana Republic and Woolrich; and Keene’s Colony Mill Marketplace draws crowds with its 150-year-old restored mill and shops including more than 120 antique dealers. Tilton’s Tanger Outlet Center boasts more than 50 brand name manufacturer and designer outlets.
